Is this a conflict of interest?

Postby Spectator on Mon Jan 12, 2009 7:22 pm

I am a spectator and know enough about football to comment on this. I was watching the game last saturday and noticed that there are players that play and coach at the same time well not only play but start and are in the game an awfull lot. How can you coach when your in the game and cant see what is going on especially if your concetrating on your own position and playing it right? Who is going to tell the players and yourself who is doing what wrong if your in the game and you have no one to tell you when you are doing something wrong? So when the coach does something wrong who is going to tell the coach he messed up or what he did wrong? Who is going to coach and tell the other players who messed up when the coach is in the game? I noticed you have a decent defense but you also seem to have alot of talent on defense if you ever go against a team with a good offensive coordinator and good talent its going to be dificult. None the less the question is wouldnt it be a conflict of interest for the players if the coaches play and coach the same position they coach?

First of all, thanks for coming out and showing your support. And your comments demonstrate that you're really interested in the success of the Rage.

It is, indeed, a conflict to have player/coaches. However, given how thin we're stretched on the staff we can't always have the ideal situation.

The offensive and defensive coordinators have oversight for just the issues that you raised; as do the other staff members. And part of the player/coaches "signing on" is that each understands and agrees that this oversight is in place.

We do occasionally have issues, but it's the best arrangement that we can set up given the circumstances.

Thanks again for your comments and......GO RAGE!

Thank you for your interest in Rage Football. I like to address some of your questions concerning my assistant coaches. As the Head Football Coach I am blessed to have these assistant coaches who are not only knowledgeable about the game of football but are team first individuals. Yes I do have some that still play but when they are on the field I coach them and I have other assistant coaches coach their position. Furthermore these coaches have added responsibility to not only get their players ready for the game but themselves as well. Again I like to thank all the players and coaches for their tremendous effort last Saturday against the Tampa Bay Hurricanes. I also like to thank everybody who showed up to support not only the Orlando Rage but most importantly the Dorcely Family.

The question is do you think its a conflict of interest that the coaches play?

To ragemaster I understand you are stretched on coaching but dont you think it will hurt the defense more to have a player coach then not to have a specific coach at all? Do you guys have a defensive coordinator and if so why doesnt he do the coaching where the players coach and let the players just be players so it doesnt rise such a conflict of interest?

conflict poll

Thank you for the clarification and your concern for the success of the Rage this year. The answer is NO, it is not a conflict of interest because these players that coach are highly skilled individuals. I had the opportunity to play under one of these coaches last year and he was always on point, playing and coaching. We have one of the strongest defenses in the country partly due to their efforts and that is why we support them 100%.
